L’Abies pinsapo est une espèce d’arbre de la famille des Pinacées originaire d’Espagne.
Arbre à croissance lente de 20 à 25 m de hauteur, il a une cime large et irrégulière et une écorce gris foncée. Les feuilles ou aiguilles persistantes et courtes entourent le rameau formant une sorte d’écouvillon. Elles sont raides, droites et piquantes et marquées de lignes blanches. Les fruits sont des cônes cylindriques dressés de 10 à 15 cm avec une pointe au sommet. Indifférent à la nature des sols il résiste bien à la sécheresse.
Les peuplements naturels existent dans les montagnes du sud de l’Espagne (sapin d’Andalousie) et dans le Rif marocain sur des terrains calcaires. On le retrouve aussi en Lozère en petits peuplements dispersés.
C’est une espèce ornementale. Il existe une variété var glauca, à branches retombantes et l’argentea à feuillage bleu argenté.

Il a été introduit en France en 1839 par l’envoi de graines de son « inventeur » le botaniste genevois BOISSIER, à M. Louis de VILMORIN à Verrières-le-Buisson.
Voici comment il le décrivait :« Le sapin Pinsapo est non seulement un des plus distincts par son feuillage spécial, mais encore un des plus beaux et des plus robustes. Il est très répandu aujourd’hui dans les cultures et bien venant à peu près partout même dans les terres calcaires, dont il s’accommode facilement. Il résiste en outre à la grande chaleur sèche du midi et y est particulièrement précieux de ce fait. »
Il a été par la suite utilisé dans quelques reboisements en Méditerranée (zones de moyenne montagne) dès la fin du XIXème siècle, tout comme d’autres espèces de sapins méditerranéens.
Ce spécimen, superbe bien qu’étêté, est visible dans le parc de la Maison Familiale de la Grange Colombe, au Patis.
