Le cèdre de l’Himalaya

Le Cedrus deodara pinaceae ( du grec Kedros et  de l’hindi deodara : arbre divin) ou cèdre déodar, est également connu sous le nom de cèdre sacré.

Originaire de l Himalaya c’est un arbre à croissance rapide et à cime pyramidale pouvant atteindre 50m de hauteur. Son écorce est grise, lisse devenant gris foncé et munie de crevasses.

Ses branches sont horizontales à extrémités ployées : elles possèdent de jeune rameaux retombants (pleureurs).

Les feuilles ou aiguilles sont persistantes, groupées en rosette : elles sont longues, aigües et de couleur vert clair.

Les cônes (fruits) sont gros, dressés, ovoïdes et pointus au sommet.

Arbre montagneux à l’origine, il a pu s’adapter aux climats tempérés doux. Il a été introduit en Europe dans le milieu du XIXème siècle. C’est une espèce forestière et ornementale grâce à ses longues aiguilles et ses jeunes rameaux pendants. Il en existe plusieurs variétés : argentea (argenté),aurea (doré),pendula (pleureur) robusta (robuste et à longues aiguilles). Les cultivars dorés et pleureurs sont les plus appréciés mais ils sont rares à Rambouillet.

Il existe aussi un cèdre bleu pleureur (Cedrus atlantica ‘Glauca Pendula’ ) dont le premier individu a été produit à l’arboretum de la Vallée-aux-Loups. C’est une espèce forestière donnant du bois de bonne qualité et poussant bien dans les climats tempérés. Par distillation du bois on obtient une huile essentielle utilisée comme antiseptique respiratoire.

Ils sont rares dans la ville de Rambouillet mais quelques exemplaires ont été repérés dans un parc d’une villa rue Pasteur et dans quelques jardins de propriétés urbaines.
