Le platane est une espèce très ancienne qui existait dés le crétacé mais avait disparu à l’ère glaciaire. On le retrouve en Italie au IVème siècle avant J.C. lorsque les armées romaines le rapportent de leur campagne en Asie (platane d’Orient) avant de l’implanter en Gaule.
Son développement en France est controversé, les uns pensant que c’est sous le règne de Louis XV, d’autres faisant état d’une première introduction dans le parc de Fontainebleau en 1642.
Une autre variété, le platane d’Occident arrive en Angleterre en 1636 d’Amérique du Nord.
Le platane commun, hybride de ces deux variétés, orientale et occidentale, est en pleine expansion sous Napoléon III, accompagnant notamment le développement des grandes voies de communication.
Un peu de botanique
Son nom scientifique, d’origine gréco-latine, Platanus, vient de “platus” qui veut dire large en référence à son ampleur. C’est un grand arbre à croissance rapide, capable de vivre plusieurs siècles.
Il peut atteindre une hauteur de plus de 50m. Son tronc est droit et recouvert d’une écorce fissurée en écailles dégageant des zones jaunâtres lui donnant l’aspect d’une peau de serpent.
Son feuillage, caduc, est composé de grandes feuilles alternes comportant 3 ou 7 lobes ressemblant à des feuilles d’érable (d’où son autre appellation, platane à feuilles d’érable). Ces feuilles en forme de main lui aurait parait-il valu dans l’antiquité une signification divine.
Il porte des fruits, ou akènes, tout ronds portés par un long pédoncule.
Le platane commun dans notre vie
Le platane, résistant et robuste, est avant tout un arbre d’ornement; il assure une belle présence dans les parcs et jardins. C’est aussi un arbre d’alignement, très utilisé le long de nos grandes routes, auxquelles il donne le charme des longues randonnées en campagne; il a aussi été accusé d’être accidentogène car beaucoup d’automobilistes imprudents se sont fracassés contre des platanes qui n’y pouvaient rien.
Malheureusement, il serait aujourd’hui en péril car contaminé par un champignon, le chanvre coloré, introduit lors du débarquement des Américains à Marseille en 1944. Il a fallu ainsi en abattre 9000 le long du canal du midi en 2012.
Son bois de couleur claire est utilisé pour la menuiserie et les charpentes. Il sert aussi grâce à sa combustion lente comme le bois de hêtre pour le chauffage.

Le Platane commun à Rambouillet
Le platane a bien entendu sa place à Rambouillet, aussi bien dans les jardins que le long de certaines routes des environs (par exemple aux Mesnuls).
On en trouve notamment dans le “jardin de Mme Duchet” rue Maurice Dechy. Ce terrain fut acheté en 1755 par Le Duc de Penthièvre qui en fit la demeure de ses procureurs fiscaux. Il est aujourd’hui divisé en un jardin public qui appartient à la ville de Rambouillet, et une partie privée. Dans celle-ci il y a également un superbe platane au port majestueux, à la frondaison équilibrée et au feuillage bien fourni.
Un autre platane, moins spectaculaire mais bien présent, est également visible dans le jardin du Roi de Rome.
D’autres font tout le charme de la place André Thôme, devant la Lanterne, et on en trouve bien d’autres dans la ville.
